I must say if I was managing a library, I would definitely purchase more electronic resources. Since we are in such an electronic age, I feel that the convenience of resources like this would be more useful to patrons. I feel like libraries are becoming less and less popular, especially since so much information can be found on the internet. Most people (like myself) have very little time to go to libraries to begin with, so any type of easy access to info that a library would have is definitely helpful. So, I would definitely purchase materials that people could purchase from their home computers, in comparison to more hard copy materials. I strongly believe that print resources are becoming obsolete due to electronic resources.
Our world is all about convenience and flexibility, especially since most people have jobs and families. Personally, I would much rather look something up real quick on an electronic resource, than have to search through different books. I am sure there are more than a few people who would agree with me on this. I am the biggest electronic buff, and I rely on the internets resources, as well as any other electronic resource I can get my hands on. I am the biggest fan of the kindle, and do not know what I would do without mine. Paperbacks and hardcover books are completely obsolete to me since I got one, and I know many people that would agree.
I have an idea that things will only get more computerized and electronic in the coming future, and the old way of doing things will be out the window pretty soon. I am sure libraries will still be around, but more electronic resources that are available in and out of a library will be utilized more often. I personally embrace the change, and welcome many more like it. I am a modern girl, and happily leave the past in the past. I hope I do not offend too many people with my viewpoints, but I have to say what I feel.
I must agree with you that would be key for a successful library, having more electronic resources becuase they are just faster and way easier to access versus print resources. It is true our world is all about whats more convienent and works around our busy schedules so I would want something that can easily be accessed via smart phone or laptop as I am on the go. I do understand where your coming from becasue the past is the past and we must embrace the future that is to come no matter how electronic it becomes.
ReplyDeleteHey Allyson; it's kind of you to end your post with, “I hope I do not offend too many people with my viewpoints, but I have to say what I feel.” As I was reading your blog post; I can tell that a few people may not agree with your viewpoint and will shoot back with their own views. I, on the other hand understand what your saying. It's hard for a lot of people to come to the terms that print resources are becoming obsolete gradually as years go by. I think that everyone has to look at it in positive terms. Print resources may become rare; but from it we were able to upgrade. Electronic resources are very convenient and helpful for just about everything. I too am embracing the change, but there are things I will not change welcome warmly. For me; I will not sit and stare into a bright screen to read a book. I choose to grip onto a nice firm book when I read.
ReplyDeleteI think print and electronic sources each have their own pros and cons...I agree that our world is becoming more and more technology driven and focused on convenience and flexibility, but I don't think that print resources will become obsolete because there will always be those who embrace tradition or those who prefer flipping through real pages or prefer the feel and scent of an aged book.
